Working out the balance between Tennis Crier and Power Spread! Tennis all over the world! Football all over the Country. And one crazed man trying to do it all!
.
AWOL! After several attempts I cannot locate Kurt. My assumption is that he has no fears of us losing this game. He possibly may not know about the early start?! KURT, WHERE ARE YOU!?
.
What Mike’s doing?
Having breakfast at his home in San Diego getting prepared for the Big Showdown at 12:30 pst between Nebraska and Northwestern! Looking for a big Husker win to soothe his wounds from the OSU debacle.
Hopefully Beck will find the consistency and simplicity his offense has been missing. He’s a very smart OC – maybe too smart. Pull it back some, coach! Stick to the PS and you will see Martinez flourish!

WHAT WE SHOULD ALL BE DOING!

PURDUE at OHIO STATE
1ST QUARTER – OSU to Kickoff
83 yd touchdown pass straight down the middle of the field over LB Storm Klein – one of my favorite late Tressel recruits! 😦 One Big play down – only 4 to go. MISSED XTRA PT! PURDUE 6-0
Unfortunately, if this doesn’t say Big 10 2012 I’m not sure what else does. Just bad football. Blown scheme and/or coverage, then missed Xtra Pt. It will change as the PS continues to infiltrate the conference. But it’s going to take time. For now this is just about the worst Big Conference in America. By 2015 it will be vying for the Best!
Sluggish on offense to start – again. Over halfway thru the season and our offense has yet to get off to a fast start in an important game.
Nice stunt action on the Dline applies the pressure and gets the stop on Purdue. We are going to get it. Fickell is a good one.
More aggressive PS by Meyer as Hyde breaks off a 20 yd run on 4th&1!
A zone read option with a nice delay fake by Miller. Nice Zone block on our left side and this constitutes BIG PLAY O-1 on a nice zone block by LG Norwell & LT Mewhort! Also, great use of the TIME by Herman. The O hurried to the Line of Scrimmage, set, then backed out and called the play. Purdue was stuck in a base D with no subs. Plus, the DLine was prepared, had to wait, then set again – this is not conducive to firing off the ball to stop a 4th and 1. Bottom Line is this was a great scheme/call and OSU didn’t screw it up, from the fake, the read, the zone blocking and the run.
Nice crossing pass to Philly Brown setting OSU near the goal line! Calm, mature pocket presence and pass by Miller. And good catch in traffic by Brown. BIG PLAY 0-2! Another error free executed play. It just takes some time.
TOUCHDOWN! MILLER TIME RUN! OSU 7-6
AHHHHH!!!! KR TD! More bad SpTeams! TRESSEL LOVED SPTEAMS, BUT SO DOES MEYER! Way too many BIG PLAYS! PURDUE 13-7
Garret Goebel on the sack. John Simon, Zach Boren and Top 2012 Recruit Noah Spence playing the system and stopping a first down! That’s the way!
AHHHHHH!! SP TEAMS!! Fake punt for 1st down Purdue!
PURDUE 13 OSU 7
.
2ND QUARTER
Sustained drive with a hybrid power/passing spread. The passing part working well. Especially on 3rd downs. Impressive by QB Caleb Terbush.
HUGE INTERCEPTION BY BARNETT! PRESSURE BY SPENCE, TIP BY SHAZIER! NO BIG PLAYS ON A SUSTAINED DRIVE BY PURDUE ENDS IN BIG PLAY OHIO STATE! THAT’S WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT! BIG PLAY OSU!
Sluggish the rest of the half. Unbelievable scoreline at half after the last 2 games.
PURDUE 13 OSU 7

HALFTIME
Not surprised at the improvement on Defense. Not that surprised at the Offense as I expect at least a mini explosion in the 2nd half. I am surprised at the continued ineptitude of the Special Teams. From Meyer’s on field interview at the half, so is he.
After the first Big Play to start the game the defense has really just about eliminated the big play. Even if there are 3 more in the 2nd Half, I think the limit of 5 is safe.
The O needs to pick it up. At least 3 big plays in the 2nd half, but preferably 5 or more.
AND SPECIAL – TEAMS GET IT TOGETHER! Meyer’s going to whack you!
.
.
3RD QUARTER
More sluggish O, but great Defense as our talent is starting to grow up and do their jobs in the top notch Schemes of Fickell! Solid the whole way across with Boren again in at LB for a possibly hurting Klein.
Some Pistol, some Old School Passing Spread routes (R&S, West Coast, etc) and its a TD Hyde! OSU 14-13.
Big Play 0-3 by Miller keeping great composure again on the 3rd down throw to Brown. No bad decisions or bad drops! Two more big plays to go!
Big Play D-2. Old School Passing Spread with a Screen Pass out of Trips Right. Total breakdown by OSU. First breakdown since the first play from scrimmage by Purdue. Couldn’t tell if its scheme, execution or both. Only 3 more to give! PURDUE 20-14
Special Teams needs to stay strong this half!
Another Big Play D-3! Only 2 left! Nice play call – Draw play out of a Power Spread concept in this Passing/Power Spread Hybrid by Purdue.
Big play – this time for the Defense of OSU. Hankins jamming up the middle on a 3rd down run. Then a SPTeams Big play on our side finally as Hankins did it again, blocking the FG attempt!!
BIG PLAY 37 YD RUN MILLER TIME! Immediately after the Blocked FG! THAT’S THE UME – Urban Meyer Experience! I think its Big Play 0-4, but need to see a replay on the blocking up front. *Note – These Big Plays are about completing the execution that has been lacking so far this year. Not on yardage or points gained or given up.
*Upon Further Review – A completely different blocking scheme from the Zone Read Option. This was an aggressive Read Option Trap play of LT. It is hard to stop, even if its not executed well. OSU made all the blocks and executed to perfection. BIG PLAY 0-4! (Read More)
Miller is hurt. Bell rung? Concussion? Something in the leg? Hard to know. Guiton in.
PURDUE 20 OSU 14
.
4TH QUARTER
THE POWER SPREAD TEAM CONCEPT IS NOT DEPENDENT ON A SINGLE PLAYER
My namesake, Drew Basel makes a great attempt on a 50 yd FG. Plenty of leg – hits the post! No good – ahhh!
ANOTHER BIG PLAY BY HANKINS! HELPED WITH SIMON!
BIG PLAY D-4. ONLY ONE LEFT! An old school play call – roll right, throwback left. Simple, but terrible overpursue by OSU! The players need to be held accountable. This is not a function of scheme! Its great that they are so motivated – but need to play within themselves. That’s where lot of the defensive mistakes are coming from.
FINALLY A BIG PLAY THE OTHER WAY WITH A BIG PUSH ON 3RD&4 LED BY BOREN AND SHAZIER
Great punt by Purdue to the 1! Then terrible blocking in the back call to give Purdue a safety! FG hits post, punt to 1, phantom block in the back. 5 pt swing and change of possession! PURDUE 22-14
DEFENSE IS GOING TO NEED TO COME UP BIG TIME! UNDER THE LIMIT OF BIG PLAYS AT 4, but now is not the time for #5.
Big first down by Purdue. Then they lost their aggression with three standard running plays to hand OSU the ball back. Could this pull back of aggression turn the tide?
PS is predicated on an aggressive mindset. Fear of mistakes can cost a game as much or more than the mistakes themselves. Guiton starts @ the 20. More room to work this time.
6:03 left
The PS isn’t predicated on one player, but Guiton coming in with a lead certainly would have been a big help.
Not having a nice lead after 3 qtrs is really unacceptable @ home against Purdue.
47 Seconds left – Not over yet with the Power Spread Attitude
GUITON TO SMITH 37 YDS! BIG PLAY O-5! Not a PS scheme but a normal passing spread. Good blocking and fantastic poise by Guiton! Great work across the field and catch by Smith!
READ OPTION ON 3RD AND 2 1ST DOWN PURDUE 14!
INTERFERENCE IN THE ENDZONE – 1ST AND GOAL!
TD PASS TO CHRIS FIELDS!! THERE’S A NEW SHERIFF IN TOWN! But we need a 2 pt conversion.
*2 PT CONVERSION* – GOOD!!!! ROLLOUT RIGHT, DELAYED RELEASE THROWBACK TO TE HEUERMAN WIDE OPEN IN THE END ZONE! GREAT CALL, GREAT SCHEME! BIG PLAY 0-6! Guiton bought time, Lineman held blocks, TE fought to work his away across the field thru the mess!
OSU 22 PURDUE 22

.
OVERTIME
SHARP PASS GUITON TO STONEBRUNNER! BIG PLAY 0-7!!!! POWER SPREAD BRINGS IT HOME WITH WHO ELSE – HYDE!! OSU 29-22!
FICKELL BLITZ – 2 INCOMPLETES! 3RD&10 . WR QUICK SLANT RIGHT – HANKINS DOWN AGAIN!
INCOMPLETE! BUCKEYES WIN!!!
OSU 29 PURDUE 22

WRAP
HOPE GOT CONSERVATIVE RUNNING THE CLOCK OUT AT THE END! BEST COACHING STAFF IN FOOTBALL , BOTH OFFENSE AND DEFENSE, LIES WITH THE BUCKEYES!
ITS A NEW ERA. THERE’S A NEW SHERIFF IN TOWN AND ITS CALLED THE POWER SPREAD AND THE URBAN MEYER EXPERIENCE!
~PS
