Johnny Manziel or PS Football

Posted: August 31, 2013 in PS Football Concepts
Great Question. Possibly the leadership and talent of a unique player can’t be separated from what is Power Spread Football. My larger question is this:  Can A&M still have a great offense without Johnny Football??   (This post will be fleshed out over the next couple of weeks)

TEXAS A&M SLOWLY MOVING TOWARDS PS FOOTBALL; FRANCHIONE  to SHERMAN
Dennis Franchione, unbeknownst to most, was a prelude to to a lot of the Spread Option schemes we see today.

Mike Sherman learned the West Coast offense from Paul Holmgren at Green Bay (who learned from Bill Walsh), but before that coached in the old school college football world where the Option was always in play. During his time at A&M he started incorporating the Spread Option in with the West Coast passing schemes.

MANZIEL RECRUITMENT
How the heck did  he end up at Texas A&M and why would Sherman’s staff recruit a Dual Threat QB for the West Coast Offense??

KEVIN SUMLIN
Power Spread all the way. Just in time for A&M’s move to the SEC.

ALABAMA BREAKDOWN
Breaking down the Offensive series’ versus the vaunted Alabama zone blitz defense of the master, Nick Saban.  Again I ask the question – Manziel or PS Football??

JOHNNY FOOTBALL or DOUG FLUTIE
I always wondered how well Flutie would fare in PS Offenses. Is Manziel a Flutie clone?

WILL THIS QUESTION BE PUT TO THE TEST IN 2013?
While Manziel has been all but cleared of allegations by the NCAA for 2013, I wouldn’t be surprised if injuries keep him out of action throughout the year. I’ve seen it before. A great year, off the field issues, team chemistry distrubed and wham – injuries abound. Again the larger question…How good is this PS Offense without their “Doug Flutie”??
